Choose the Right Shade Awning Fabric for Your Awning

The shade of an awning can greatly reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed by your patio or deck. There are a variety of different shade fabrics, each with their pros and cons. The best awning fabric offers the right balance between aesthetics and functionality.

The most common shade awning fabrics are vinyl and solution-dyed acrylic. These are the most durable, long-lasting, and versatile types of awning fabrics available. Awning fabrics are made in a wide variety of colors, patterns and styles to match any decor. These fabrics also feature high-performance grades to withstand the elements, including hail and harsh winter weather.

In the past, cotton canvas was used for awnings but this material tended to shrink and tear over time. Acrylic painted canvas and vinyl-coated canvas offered better protection against the elements but they did not offer the beauty and longevity of modern awning fabrics. In the 1970s, a new type of awning fabric was developed that offered the durability and low maintenance of vinyl but the color held up better than traditional canvas. This new shade fabric was called solution-dyed acrylic.

There are some other options available, such as actual canvas and products that combine woven acrylic, polyester or cotton with vinyl. These fabrics are often referred to as “canvas re-invented.” Canvas is not as water resistant as synthetic materials but it does provide some unique features that can make it a desirable choice for your awning. Canvas is breathable and it allows air to flow through the fabric, encouraging evaporation of rainwater and lowering the temperature under the awning. It is also easy to maintain, requiring only occasional cleaning with soap and water.
